The Florida-Georgia Football Game

The first time I attended a Florida-Georgia football game was in 1965. I was away at college in Virginia while my boyfriend was going to college at Florida on a football scholarship. First year players didn’t play on the varsity team. They were known as Baby Gators, but they dressed out with the rest of the team for the games.

My parents flew me home that year to attend the game and to see my boyfriend. I remember being terribly homesick so the trip home helped. So did kissing Bill the night before the game.

Back then people dressed up for the Florida-Georgia football game. I remember being picked at my family home by two of Bill’s fraternity brothers. I wore a dark blue dress with a matching short jacket, heels, and pearls of course. My hair was long and blond back then, and I wore makeup but not too much. Perfume: Probably Chanel or Estée Lauder.

It’s funny that I can remember those details, but I can’t tell you what I had for dinner last night.

Anyway, Steve Spurrier was the quarterback that year. I suspect everyone knows who he is so I won’t bore you with details.

Did Florida win that day? I honestly don’t remember!

Today is the day of the annual Florida-Georgia football game. RV City is full of fans from both sides. Many of these people have been camping next to each other for years, they have become great friends, and it doesn’t matter who they came to support … not until they get inside the stadium.

The game will begin at 3:30 p.m EST on CBS.

Go Gators!
